If humans had taglines, what would yours be?
To be honest when I started writing this post I was a little fuzzy on the difference between a Tagline and Nicknames… so read this post with that awareness:
I have had many Taglines over the years… some I have enjoyed, others less so… at least at the time. Apparently I am very tagline susceptible.
tag line (noun)
INFORMAL•NORTH AMERICAN
- a catchphrase or slogan, especially as used in advertising, or the punchline of a joke.
So what have my taglines been?
Let’s see….Vest Man, Man with a Beard, “The Guy”, The glue of our team, Most passionate Help Desk you’ve ever met, and then of course: just Dad.
These are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head. There have been some I didn’t enjoy. One, I didn’t enjoy at first, but have had to accept is “Guy that looks like Zach Galifianakis” or “Man with Baby from the Hangover” I’ve been told that all I would have to do is go to downtown New York with a baby carrier and doll and I would make tons of money as a lookalike.
I appreciate It a little bit more now that I have a baby.
God has even given me a few as well…One time I was listening to a prophetic person speak. He asked me my name.. I told him it was Sam.
He told me I was a “Strategic Apostolic Missile” (shared for purposes of illustration alone)
To be honest I am a little fuzzy on The place where nicknames ends and where taglines begin.
Jesus is the master of both though. I’m not the only one he has given nicknames or catch phrases.
He called his disciples James and John: The sons of Thunder.
Simon he nicknamed Rocky (Peter is Greek for Rock)
He had two James in his group. One he nicknamed “James the Little” or “James the Younger”
I heard somewhere that this was somewhat an ironic title since he was actually older than the The other James…. Kinda like how Little John in Robinhood is the biggest of them all.
In the Old Testament (also known as the Tanach) God renames Abram to Abraham (Great Father to Father of Many Nations)
He renames Jacob (Heel grabber) to Israel: He who struggles with God) after a wrestling match between Jacob and God.
In each case they are terms of both affection AND identity.
Abraham goes on to literally father many nations..
Israel goes on to father a nation who is always at their best when they struggle with God and seek His blessing.
Rocky goes on to be a founding member/stone of Christ’s community.
James and John become two of the most powerful disciples of Jesus… one becoming the first apostolic martyr (missionary giving his life for Jesus) and the other to write significant portions of the New Testament.
My story… hasn’t been completed yet… but I pray every day that I would be faithful to His call AND His affection.
