The History Nut Goes Bananas: Who is your favorite historical figure? (WordPress Prompt)

Who is your favorite historical figure?

This one caused a lot of reflection for me… not because I didn’t know the answer…

The only question that truly remained was: How to write about it.

I spend the majority of my time on this blog talking about how my favorite historical figure isn’t ONLY history to me, but is also my best friend. This is possible because of the Holy Spirit.

In case it is unclear: my favorite all time historical figure is Jesus… any other person I could list would be because of Him.

I considered writing about my second favorite person in history: William Wilberforce

God intercepted his life and set him on a path that ended with the abolition of the slave trade

Or I could write about one of my two favorite authors:

1. G.K. Chesterton: God intercepted His life and gave some awesome writing… both fictional and non-fiction. My favorite book is by him: Orthodoxy

2. C.S.Lewis: His writings, The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity, have had the most profound impact on my life. They have helped me engage Jesus in a modern, western context.

Perhaps I could talk about the person I am most likely to emulate in terms of life calling: John Wesley: He was a leader and missionary in England. I don’t even remember how many miles he rode sharing the gospel…his ministry also sets up the spiritual conditions that led to the abolition of the slave trade.

John Wesley is also the one who said my favorite short quote:

Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.

John Wesley

Regardless of who I had chosen to write about , it would have led me back to one inescapable reality…

If I were to interview any of these people I mentioned… If I were to ask them the question burning on my heart: What is the secret to your success?

I know with confidence each of them would come back to me with the same exact answer.

Jesus.

If I were to really dig and ask them why they said that…. I expect if I really dug…. I would evoke tears in each of their eyes….. and I expect the answer would be the same

Because… He changed my life
